Reading

A quick list of books I actually finished with a summary and my notes. I try to keep this page updated. If you have any questions, you can also email me.

Title: Making Elephants Fly / 讓大象飛

Author: Steven Hoffman

Topic: Radical Innovation/Lean Startup

Why Reading It?

Making Elephants Fly is designed to help you implement the same innovation methodologies and processes as Silicon Valley startups. It will teach you: How startups come up with breakthrough products and services.

Finished date: 10/2021

My notes

What on earth is innovation? How have organizations been approaching it? Specifically, how did silicon valley startups approach it, and what's the secrete sauce?

My unanswered questions:

Can we apply to all organizations? Who is the best receptor of this Silicon Valley approach? How is it better?

Title: The Why Axis

Author: Uri Gneezy

Topic: Psychology/Behavioral Economics

Why Reading It?

What makes people do what they do? How might we understand human motivation through randomized experiments in the field? Knowing self-interest lies at the root of human motivation, how can we design a system to leverage it?

Finished date: 10/2021

My notes

This is a fun read that explores the connection between human behavior and rewards and punishment (monetary and non-monetary), and discussed the effectiveness of public policies. The author mentioned, "Rewarding people on the basis of what they really value, their time, their self-image as good citizens, is often much more motivating than just slapping a couple of bills."

We need to be particularly careful with money, as add monetary values to action might change its meaning. For businesses, running small experiments can help understand the relationship between a change in strategy and a response in consumers’, competitors’, employees’, or other stakeholders’ behavior.
